Noida: There is need to redefine the word development to resolve environmental crisis, said environmentalist Asit Das while addressing IMII students in Noida on Monday.

“We have to realise that consumption is not development,” said Das who is a research fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS).

According to him, the country faces as ecological crisis, and not environmental problem. He blamed the industrial revolution of 18th century for trigging environmental crisis across the globe.

Das thinks that our political system is not doing enough to tackle the environmental issues.

“I think lack of strong political will creates problem to solve environmental crisis, ” laminated Das.

“Proper implementation of environmental norms is also a challenge for the government,” he added.

He blames that the congress for blocking mines in north-east region.

Das also mentioned that the ground water level is going down rapidly and our resources of drinking water are getting affected. Most European rivers are polluted and the water of the Ganga is not usable after Kanpur.

“The level of ground water will drop 40 per cent globally in coming 20 years,” Das said.

Nuclear weapons are crates problems. Uranium which is used to make nuclear weapons takes 500 years to normalize.

“Ozone layer is getting affected, birds are disappearing, climate is changing and people of country are suffering different kind of deadly dieses,” said Das.

Commenting on increasing urban syndrome in country he said “Rapid urbanization is also a big challenge for environment. According to him by 2014 India will have the highest urban population in the world.”

Discussing about impact of pollution he said that every fourth child born in Delhi has asthma.

Answering to a question about the solutions of such problems, Das advised that there is a need for resistance.

“But before it we to have educate people raise their voice.”
